James Craig an 18 year old Miner from Lasswade enlisted into the Scots Guards at Dunfermline in 1892 . He served in South Africa from march 1900 until May 1901 . The casualty roll shows him
wounded on 28/07/1900 at Slaapkrantz his online papers also show he was reported missing this day , he was discharged from the army in 1904 , his mothers address at the time being in Loanhead Midlothian


"as evidently only a matter of time now with the Boers, for British heliographs were sparkling from every peak which girt them in. On the 28th the Scots Guards, with supreme dash, carried the position of Slaapkrantz. Upon July 29th Prinsloo sent in a request for an armistice, which was refused. Later in the day he despatched a messenger with the white flag to Hunter with an announcement of his unconditional surrender"
