William Edward Main 1st Dragoons ( Royals ), Son of James and Rose Main; husband of Renee Edith Eileen Main of Birmingham was killed in action in North African on the 28th of May 1942 . He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial

Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War (1939-45), The 1st Dragoons ( Royals ) became a mechanised unit, joining the Royal Armoured Corps in 1940. It served as an armoured reconnaissance regiment in Syria (1941) and North Africa, where it fought in the Gazala battles and at El Alamein in 1942
