QSA 4 bars Defence of Kimberley Orange Free State Transvaal SA01 4835 PTE A PHILLIPS 1/L N LANC REGT

Arthur Phillips ( real name John Ballard ) a 22 year old clerk from Poplar enlisted into the Loyal north Lancs Regiment 1n 1895. he served in South Africa and was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour for desertion , this being remitted to one year which he served from October 1900 until October 1901 . he died in May 1907 , his name on the death certificate showing as John Ballard.
