Alfred James Beatwell an 18 year old farmer from Bicknacre Chelmsford Essex , enlisted into the 1st Essex Regiment in 1935 . He was taken prisoner of war at Merca Matrah , North Africa in 1942 whilst serving with the 1 /4th Essex Regt
He was held in Upper Silesia from May 1942 until January 1945 and thereafter was on the march until finally released and repatriated in May 1945
