Golding Goldstone an 18 year old labourer from Bromley by Bow enlisted into the Essex Regiment in 1890 , he served until 1902 including from 11th November 1899 until the 28th of July 1900 in South Africa, he was wounded at Driefontein on the 10th of March 1900

At Driefontein, or Abraham's Kraal, on 10th March, the Essex and Welsh took part in a splendid bayonet-charge which elicited the commendations of Lord Roberts. The losses of the battalion were approximately 2 officers and 14 men killed, 2 officers and 70 men wounded. Seven officers and 10 non-commissioned officers and men of the battalion were mentioned in Lord Roberts' despatch of 31st March 1900. Lieutenant F N Parsons was awarded the VC for exceptional gallantry at Paardeberg. Unfortunately he was killed at Driefontein, when he was again displaying conspicuous gallantry.
